Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania sit side by side, but each feels like a world of its own. Come for Sarajevo’s markets, Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, and Albania’s mountain villages. Leave talking about the meals, stories, and people you met along the way!
The Balkans can change completely in an afternoon. In Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, Ottoman market lanes meet Austro-Hungarian avenues while coppersmiths work behind open shop doors. Days later, we’ll be beside Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor, where a walled town sits between the Adriatic and steep mountains. Then the road climbs toward Theth, a village beneath the limestone peaks of the Albanian Alps. These countries share a corner of Europe, but each has its own traditions, history, and character.
Through our local contacts we’ll experience these places alongside the people who know them best. Sarajevo’s guides will connect its mosques, markets, Jewish heritage, and wartime scars to life in the city today. In Mostar we’ll learn to stretch burek dough by hand. A family in Pocitelj, a stone village built into a hillside, will welcome us for a picnic and conversation. We’ll meet winemakers in Montenegro, spend time with hosts in Theth, and visit a working farm where northern Albania’s rural traditions continue through its orchards, dairy, and smokehouse.
The past is never far away. We’ll enter a Cold War bunker built inside a mountain for Yugoslavia’s leaders, stand near the Sarajevo street corner where an assassination helped trigger World War I, and explore an underground shelter in Tirana that reveals Albania’s years of communist isolation. Between those stories, we’ll watch the Buna River burst from a cave at Blagaj, wander through Mostar’s old town, step inside Kotor’s city walls, and walk through the valleys around Theth.
By the time we gather for our farewell dinner in Tirana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania will no longer feel like unfamiliar names on a map. The local relationships behind this journey will have taken us beyond the main sights and into the traditions and daily life that give each country its character. We’ll leave understanding what sets them apart, what connects them, and why this corner of Europe is so hard to forget!
*For those not ready for the journey to end, an optional post-tour extension will add North Macedonia and Kosovo to the experience. From Tirana, we’ll continue to North Macedonia for lunch and time beside Lake Ohrid before exploring Skopje, the country’s capital. We’ll then cross into Kosovo for two more days of sightseeing and local experiences before returning to Skopje for departure.
