Wander Across Iceland

September 2027
Wander Across Iceland

Overview

Experience the land of fire and ice in all its majesty, with our exclusive tour of Iceland's breathtaking natural wonders, unique culture and captivating traditions!

Starting in Reykjavík, we’ll head into West Iceland, Snæfellsnes, and the Golden Circle, then continue along quieter stretches of the south and southeast where the scenery gets bigger and the crowds thin out. Our focus won’t only be on famous viewpoints. We’ll also spend time with the everyday side of Iceland, meeting local people, tasting what’s made on farms, and seeing how life works in smaller communities once you’re away from the main routes.

This trip will be full of the moments people picture when they think of Iceland, but experienced at a pace that lets them land. We’ll walk on blue ice with a glacier guide and see the deep cracks, blue layers, and ash lines that tell Iceland’s volcanic story. We’ll watch icebergs drift at Jökulsárlón, stand close to powerful waterfalls, and feel geothermal heat rising from the ground in places where steam and boiling water are part of the landscape. We’ll also spend time with Icelandic horses, visit working coastal towns, and take in dramatic coastline where black sand, cliffs, and sea stacks make the Atlantic feel very close.

At night, we’ll head out beyond the city lights and spend time under Iceland’s dark skies, with a good chance to catch the Northern Lights. We’ll wrap up back in Reykjavík for a final evening together, with time to look back on the week and everything we’ve covered. If you’re the kind of traveler who likes big landscapes, real local context, and days that leave room to take it all in, this trip is a great fit for you!

Highlights: Full Reykjavik food and history tour, Northern Lights experience

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning we’ll head out on a guided food and city walk through central Reykjavík, stopping at small cafés and bakeries to taste local classics such as rye bread with butter and smoked fish, lamb soup, skyr with fruit or honey, and something warm from the oven. As we walk your guide will connect the food to daily Icelandic life and point out how the city grew from a fishing town into the capital it is today, with time around the harbor area and a good view of Hallgrímskirkja from below. After the tour the afternoon will be open for you to choose your own adventure. Options include a museum, a waterfront walk, time inside Harpa, or a whale watching cruise from the old harbor. In the evening we’ll head away from the city's glow to try and (hopefully) catch the magical Northern Lights, a natural spectacle caused by solar particles colliding with Earth's atmosphere.

Today we’ll head into the farmlands of West Iceland for a farms and food day that puts the focus on scenery, rural life, and the people working the land. We’ll travel on quieter country roads through the broader Hvalfjörður area, with peaceful stops along the Vatnaleið route, including waterfalls that tend to be empty compared to the busier routes. We’ll visit a selection of farms, meet farmers, hear their stories, and taste fresh Icelandic products that often include dairy, cheeses, cured or smoked specialties, seasonal produce, and other small batch items tied to long standing traditions. We’ll keep room for the small interactions that happen naturally out here, then we’ll continue on to our hotel in Reykholt for the night.

Highlights: Snæfellsnes Peninsula, beautiful nature, Icelandic horses

Meal

We’ll spend the day circling the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, an area that packs a lot of Iceland into one loop, fishing towns, jagged coastline, open views, and the presence of Snæfellsjökull in the distance, a glacier capped volcano that sits at the center of plenty of local stories. We’ll stop to take in Kirkjufell, the sharply shaped mountain beside the lake, then we’ll add two experiences that bring the day closer to the ground. We’ll take a gentle walk at Gufuá along the Cairn Path, following old stone markers across open countryside while hearing the history and folklore tied to them, then we’ll finish with a light beach horseback ride at Lýsuhóll, a relaxed introduction to the Icelandic horse and a great way to feel the coastline before we head back to our hotel for the night.

Highlights: Golden Circle

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we’ll head out on a private Golden Circle day, a route that ties together geology, history, and how people live with Iceland’s natural forces. We’ll begin at Þingvellir National Park, where you’ll stand in the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates and hear how this became the meeting place of Iceland’s early parliament. From there we’ll continue to the Geysir geothermal area to see hot water surge from the earth, then we’ll visit Gullfoss, a powerful multi tiered waterfall dropping into a rugged canyon. Around midday we’ll stop at Friðheimar to see how Iceland grows vegetables year round using geothermal heat, then we’ll have a tomato focused lunch inside the greenhouse. We’ll also visit Sólheimar, a sustainable community founded in 1930, where residents work in organic farming, craft and art workshops, and small community businesses, which offers a very different look at Iceland beyond the big views.

Meal

After breakfast we’ll head along Iceland’s South Coast toward the Skaftafell area, with the Atlantic on one side and glaciers and lava landscapes on the other. We’ll stop at Seljalandsfoss, where a marked path can take you behind the falling water, and at Skógafoss, a wide 60 meter drop with stairs up to sweeping views from above. We’ll continue to Reynisfjara to walk the black sand and see the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising offshore, then we’ll pause in Vík for a view of the small hilltop church and the coastline beyond before heading to Dyrhólaey, a high headland with a natural rock arch and wide views over the sea and beaches. In the afternoon we’ll attend the Icelandic Lava Show, where you’ll safely see real molten lava poured in a controlled setting and feel the heat up close, then we’ll continue on to our hotel in Fagurhólsmýri for the evening.

Highlights: Glaciers, coastal scenery, and the Eastfjords

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today we’ll continue east for a day focused on glaciers, coastal scenery, and the quieter rhythm of the Eastfjords. We’ll travel through landscapes shaped by Vatnajökull, the vast ice cap that feeds multiple glacier tongues spilling into valleys, then we’ll stop at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift across the water in front of the glacier and often move out toward the coast. Afterwards we’ll continue into the Eastfjords, a region of long narrow inlets, steep mountain walls, and fishing villages tucked into natural harbors, with time for viewpoints as the road winds along the fjords. With some luck we may spot wild reindeer near the roadside, then we’ll visit Petra’s Stone Collection in Stöðvarfjörður, which is a surprisingly good way to understand Iceland’s volcanic and mineral history through stones gathered locally over decades.

Arrival

Highlights: Glacier hike, free time, farewell dinner

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll start our return toward Reykjavík with a stop in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park, home to some of Iceland’s most striking ice landscapes. Here our glacier guide will outfit us with crampons and helmets for the Blue Ice Experience, a two hour walk on Svínafellsjökull, an outlet glacier flowing down from the Vatnajökull ice cap into the valley below. We’ll step onto the ice and follow an easy route that brings us close to clear blue sections, deep crevasses, and dark ash layers from past eruptions, with time to pause for photos and questions as we learn how glaciers form and how they shape the land around them. After the walk we’ll continue the drive back to Reykjavík, and you’ll have time to rest before we come together for our farewell dinner.
