Wander Across India

March 2027
Wander Across India

Overview

Get ready for this one-of-a-kind Wandering Earl Tours journey through India, made possible by our local contacts and based on the personal travels of Wandering Earl.

We’ll start in the north with Delhi’s energy and contrasts, where faith, food, and daily life share the same space and the streets always seem to have something going on. From there we’ll step into the Mughal story with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then continue into Rajasthan for a steadier pace, lakeside evenings, old town walks, and time in places that still feel rooted and close to home. In Udaipur and Bundi we’ll share chai, visit villages, and spend time around traditional crafts and small town routines. We’ll also head out for a tiger safari in a quiet reserve nearby, and we’ll include a stay at a five star heritage hotel in a former palace, a comfortable reset point in the middle of the journey.

After Rajasthan, we’ll fly south to Kochi and the backwaters, a newer addition to this itinerary that adds coastal side of India. Kochi is shaped by spice routes, migration, and centuries of trade, and you’ll feel that mix in its neighborhoods and waterfront. We’ll explore Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, then slow down on an overnight houseboat through the backwaters, a calm network of canals and lagoons lined with palms where daily life unfolds on the water. We’ll close with Kathakali, a story driven performance that is best experienced live and gives real context to Kerala’s artistic traditions.

This route is only possible due to all of our local contacts and connections. They will help us arrange experiences that most visitors never reach and have real cultural connections, such as family hosted moments, school visits, and craft communities that are tied to daily life. We’ll also keep space for the surprise moments India always delivers. A celebration in the street, a market detour, or a stop that turns into one of your favorite memories!

After lunch we'll travel to a remote village where traditional saris will still be woven using family techniques passed down over generations. We'll walk through the village and meet the artisans, then learn how patterns and methods will be taught, what materials will be used, and how weaving will fit into daily life. There will be time to understand what it takes to keep this craft going and why it can be hard to reach wider markets, which will add a real world layer to something many people only see as a finished product.

Essentials

Physical Level: Medium

While the tour is not particularly strenuous, please note that it includes somewhat long days, walking tours in crowded, chaotic cities and dusty villages, a local cuisine that may not be suited to restrictive dietary requirements, potentially warm, sticky weather and early morning wake-ups.

Accommodation

On this trip, accommodations include a selection of conveniently located and comfortable 3* and 4* hotels and boutique heritage guesthouses, as well as a night in a highly-rated 5* palace hotel and a boathouse in the Alleppey Backwaters. Accommodation is mid-range and all rooms offer a comfortable stay with a private bathroom. However, please keep in mind that accommodation in India can have some quirks! *Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

We'll travel in comfort in our deluxe vans throughout the tour. The use of vans instead of a minibus ensures flexibility, plenty of space for each guest and access to areas that larger vehicles simply can't go. The trip also includes an internal flight from Udaipur to Kochi and an overnight boat ride in the Alleppey Backwaters.

Meals

Breakfast every day, 7 lunches and 11 dinners are included. With included meals, some will be served family style and other times you will be able to order anything you wish from the menu. All dietary restrictions can be accommodated with prior notice, although the variety might be limited to guests with restrictive dietary requirements.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. Trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!

Itinerary Changes

While we do our best to follow the itinerary, changes may be made to any aspect of the tour due to a variety of potential situations or unforeseen circumstances.
