Wander to Mongolia

Wander to Mongolia

Overview

Join us for this unique adventure across Mongolia’s open country, with blue lakes, forested valleys, and sand dunes. We’ll meet herding families for milk tea, watch daily rounds of grazing and milking, and stop whenever the road offers wildlife, a view, or a warm invitation.

Get ready for this Wandering Earl Tours journey through Mongolia. We’ll stay in felt covered gers with wood stoves, share hearty meals, and spend unhurried time with people we meet along the way, hearing stories and getting a real feel for life beyond the cities. Our days will include walks in nature, a boat ride on a mountain lake, time in natural hot springs, and easy options to ride horses, with a pace that lets you enjoy it instead of powering through it. We’ll also step into monasteries, visit the old imperial heartland, and pause in small towns for everyday moments that big group tours usually skip.

As we move through the country, Mongolia’s story will come into focus alongside big shifts in landscape. You can expect clear alpine lakes, larch forests, wide grasslands, volcanic scenery, river valleys, and the first true sweep of sand dunes, all experienced in a way that feels steady and grounded. The cultural side will be just as present, and some of the best moments will happen between the main stops. A quiet chat at a roadside tea stop, a warm welcome into a herding family’s ger, or pulling over when a sudden view feels too good to pass up.

This won’t be a standard tour. We’ll travel in a small group, keep the flow comfortable, and rely on trusted local people to help the experience feel personal. If you’re the kind of traveler who values open space, real connection, and some of the most amazing nature in the world, Mongolia is waiting for you!

Here we'll be invited to help with daily tasks such as rolling noodles, stirring milk tea, or shaping dumplings. We'll also talk about the animals, the seasons, and how dairy is prepared and dried. We’ll then continue for about 30 minutes to a nearby seasonal lake, where we may spot migratory waterfowl resting on their route between the Siberian tundra and warmer regions farther south. The afternoon will be hands-on and a lot of fun! We'll help move camp, put up a ger, and get a clear feel for how nomadic life works day to day. Depending on what’s happening on site, you may also try milking, learn how felt is made, and watch herding skills, music, and riding up close. Essentials

Physical Level: Moderate/High

Please note that this unique adventure can involve multiple light hikes and walks, long hours outdoors in warm and cold temperatures, early mornings, long jeep rides on rough, unpaved roads, basic accommodations, basic meals, and other potentially challenging scenarios. To get the most out of the experience, you should be comfortable walking for up to two hours at a time on rough, uneven terrain and prepared for spending 11 nights of camping in ger tents in remote locations.

Accommodation

On this tour we'll use a 5-star hotel in Ulaanbaatar and traditional ger camps throughout the countryside. Gers are heated, furnished with real beds and linens, and vary by camp. Most will have private in-ger bathrooms and a couple will have clean shared facilities with hot water available at set times. *Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

Throughout our tour, we'll navigate Mongolia in 4x4 SUVs. There will be approximately 3 guests per SUV as we navigate the countryside. There will also be an inner flight.

Meals

Breakfast every day, 12 lunches and 13 dinners are included. With included meals, some will be served family style and other times you will be able to order anything you wish from the menu. While the food is delicious in Mongolia, kindly be aware that variety of dishes will be limited in the more remote regions. However, all dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Bathrooms

Please note: On travel days, bathroom breaks will often be outdoors or at basic roadside facilities, as services are limited in remote areas. At our ger camps, most sites will have private in-ger bathrooms, although a couple will have simple shared bath blocks with toilets and hot-water showers at set times.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. Trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!

Itinerary Changes
