Wander to Portugal

Overview

Discover Portugal through a trip filled with food, history, and local connections, from the backstreets of Lisbon to vineyard terraces in the Douro and the riverfront energy of Porto.

This brand new itinerary is shaped by Wandering Earl’s own travels in Portugal and made possible through our local contacts. We’ll show you the country beyond the usual stops, mixing Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra with places that many visitors never reach. We’ll head to the schist built Xisto Villages in the mountains, the striped seaside houses of Costa Nova, and the Douro Valley, where vineyard terraces rise above the river and the pace naturally slows down. Along the way we’ll also make time for palaces and monasteries, as well as some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world.

What really sets this trip apart is how often you’ll be meeting people and getting a real feel for local life. You will spend a morning at a community based farm connected to the Cascais area, walking the fields, picking seasonal vegetables, and sharing a picnic that reflects everyday local cooking. In the Douro we’ll stay at a family run guesthouse, experience the valley from the river on a traditional Rabelo boat, and visit a winery for a tasting. In Coimbra we’ll sit in for Fado, a local music tradition that is best experienced live, and in Porto we’ll paint our own azulejo tiles with local artisans. Along the way we’ll enjoy food moments tied to place, including a ginginha and chocolate tasting, Porto’s francesinha, and regional meals that match where we are each day.

Essentials

Moderate Physical Level

While the tour itself is not very strenuous, please note that it can involve somewhat long days, walking tours in the cities for up to 2 hours on uneven terrain (cobblestone streets and hillside villages), being outside in potentially diverse temperatures, a few long drives, early morning wake-ups and other similar scenarios.

Accommodation

On this tour, we’ll stay in comfortable 3* and 4* hotels, as well as a couple of traditional quintas, which are countryside estates. All rooms have a private bathroom. *Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

During the trip, we'll travel in comfort with our deluxe, air-conditioned van. There will always be plenty of space for each guest, while traveling in a vehicle that gives us access to areas that buses simply can't reach. We'll also take a couple of local trains for our day trips.

Meals

Breakfast every day, 8 lunches and 6 dinners are included. With included meals, some will be served family style and buffet style, and other times you will be able to order anything you wish from the menu. All dietary restrictions can be accommodated with prior notice although there may be limited options for some requirements.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. Trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!

Itinerary Changes

While we do our best to follow the itinerary, changes may be made to any aspect of the tour due to a variety of potential situations or unforeseen circumstances.
