Wander To Mauritania

Overview

Join us on an extraordinary adventure across little-known Mauritania where surreal nature, remote villages, a deep history and endless cultural activities await!

Get ready for a real off the beaten path journey through Mauritania, a country where desert landscapes, deep history, and everyday traditions come together in a way most travelers never see. From the laid back streets of Nouakchott to vast stretches of Sahara, we will move at a steady pace through ancient towns, remote oases, and small villages where life still follows the land, the seasons, and long standing routines.

Our route will take us from the capital to the towering Azoueiga Dunes and the palm filled springs of Terjit Oasis, with time to slow down at places such as Mheireth where water and shade feel almost unreal after hours in the open desert. We will visit Chinguetti and Ouadane, towns shaped by caravan routes and scholarship, with weathered stone lanes and old libraries that are still cared for today. We will also spend time in Atar’s markets, where you can see what people are actually buying and trading, and we will travel out to the Eye of the Sahara, a huge geological formation that feels even more strange and impressive when you are standing there on the ground. The entire time, we’ll soak up the natural scenery, meet local communities, pass caravans crossing the desert and enjoy home-cooked meals.

Highlights of the trip also include camping under the stars beside massive sand dunes and along the serene and remote coastline, visiting hidden oases, and, for those who want a truly unique experience, the option to ride the legendary Iron Ore Train. This tour is an invitation to an authentic and magical travel experience that so few will ever enjoy!

Meal

Today we'll depart Nouakchott early and begin heading east toward the Sahara. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, and it is a chance to watch the country change gradually, from city edges to smaller towns and villages, then into wider, emptier stretches. Part of the day will be on paved roads, then we'll transition onto desert travel, where the route feels less defined and the horizon starts to take over. We'll stop in Akjoujt for lunch and to gather any last supplies, then continue into the dunes. By late afternoon we'll reach the Azoueiga Dunes, the tallest in Mauritania, and settle into our pre set canvas tents. As the temperature softens, we'll head out into the sand for time to explore at a comfortable pace. Near sunset, we'll climb into the highest dune for a view that explains why people fall for the Sahara. Our guides will prepare dinner over the campfire, and we’ll spend the night under the stars in this breathtaking location. → Overnight camping

The drive takes about 3.5 hours, with a stop for lunch halfway. We'll arrive at the Terjit Oasis in the afternoon, a pocket of green tucked into the desert, with flowing springs, small waterfalls, palm groves, and cliffs rising above the water. The shift in atmosphere is immediate. We'll have time to explore, cool off in the water if you feel up to it, and settle into our simple campsite set in a quiet garden. → Overnight camping (with shared toilets and cold water showers)

We'll have about an hour to take it in, and, if you want, you can take a refreshing dip in the cool water. Later we'll continue into Mheireth village and check into our camp. In the afternoon we'll take a guided walk through the village, stopping at small markets and shops, meeting locals, and getting a more personal feel for what daily life looks like in a remote desert community. We'll drive across the formation and reach its inner core, where you can step out and take in the textures and colors up close. On the way back to Oudane we'll stop for a picnic lunch and make time for other viewpoints in the area. In the afternoon we'll explore Oudane itself, walking through the older alleys past mosques and crumbling stone homes, and piecing together how this town once functioned as a crossroads for caravans, traders, and scholars. After breakfast we'll begin the journey north toward the remote village of Choum, with a brief stop to see a slice of everyday life in this small desert settlement. We'll then drive about two hours to Ben Amera, the second largest monolith in the world, rising sharply from the desert in a way that makes the surroundings feel even more open. We'll take time to explore the area, walk around the base at a comfortable pace, and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon we'll continue another two hours to the village of Tmeimichat, where we'll reach the loading station for the Iron Ore Train. The overnight ride to Nouadhibou takes about 10 hours and there are no passenger cars. You'll climb up a ladder, place a blanket on top of the iron ore, and ride on the open wagon. This overnight train trip is optional. We'll take our time here, knowing it is our last long look at Mauritania’s wild edge. Essentials

Physical Level: Moderate/High

Please note that this unique adventure can involve the following: long days, being outside in potentially diverse temperatures, extended periods of time in the desert, long bumpy journeys along unpaved roads for up to 6 hours at a time, early morning wake-ups, basic accommodations (including camping with no access to bathrooms), basic meals, and other potentially challenging scenarios.

Accomodation

This tour includes 3*/4* hotels in the cities, as well as local guesthouses and basic camping experiences in tents out in the countryside. There is also an optional night on the Iron Ore Train. All hotels and most guesthouses have private bathrooms. While camping, there will be shared bathrooms in some locations. Tents, mattresses, pillows and blankets will be provided. Those who book a single room will have their own tent while camping. At the guesthouses, electricity may not work at certain times and hot water cannot be guaranteed at all times. However, the experience is unforgettable! * Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

Throughout our tour, we'll navigate Mauritania in 4x4 SUVs. There will be approximately 3 guests per SUV as we navigate the countryside. There will also be an optional overnight trip on the Iron Ore Train. Please keep in mind that most bathroom stops will be in remote areas without facilities.

Meals

Breakfast every day, 11 lunches and 13 dinners are included. With included meals, some will be served family style and others will involve ordering from a menu. Please be aware that variety of dishes will be limited in the more remote regions. However, all dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Bathrooms

Please note: While driving between destinations, bathroom stops will often be in nature due to a lack of proper bathrooms in remote areas. While at our campsites, some will have simple bathroom facilities with toilets and cold water showers, and others will not have any bathroom facilities. At the hotels and some of the guesthouses, we will have proper private bathrooms for each room.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. We seek out ways to limit plastic use, trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!

Itinerary Changes

While we do our best to follow the itinerary, changes may be made to any aspect of the tour due to a variety of potential situations or unforeseen circumstances.
