Wander to Mexico City

Overview

Get ready to join our unique journey into the heart of Mexico! We’ll dive into its rich history, flavorful cuisine, and vibrant culture in a way most travelers never get to experience.

Welcome to Mexico City, where the past is woven into the present and every neighborhood tells a story. Ancient ruins stand alongside neighborhood cafés, museums, and family-run food stalls, while traditions passed down for generations continue to shape everyday life. Despite its size, there’s a warmth that makes it feel personal, making you feel more like a guest than just a passerby. We’ve planned an itinerary that reveals a deeper side of this city, beyond what most visitors ever see.

As we travel, we’ll explore the Historic Center’s centuries-old streets, visit the pyramids of Teotihuacán to discover why it once stood at the heart of its world, and wander through Coyoacán to see how art, tradition, and daily life come together at the Frida Kahlo Museum. We’ll enjoy breakfast on Xochimilco’s chinampas and join the Garibaldi festivities as mariachi bands fill the air. Thanks to our local partners, we’ll have VIP access at a lucha libre show and have the rare chance of spending time on a rooftop with a local musician, enjoying a private concert and a home-made dinner. We’ll also talk to farmers who’s work is to preserve age-old growing methods and cooks who share their cultural heritage in every dish. By the end, you’ll have a deeper understanding of what makes Mexico City so special.

Arrival

Highlights: Teotihuacán, optional Mariachi night

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Early in the morning we’ll head out to Teotihuacán, an ancient city that was once among the largest in the world. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, it predates the Aztec civilization by about a thousand years and gives us a window into a powerful pre-Hispanic culture and the mysteries that still surround it. As we explore its towering pyramids, we’ll learn about the people who built them, their beliefs, and the reasons their city may have vanished. Afterwards we’ll have lunch at La Gruta, a unique restaurant set inside a natural cave right beside the archaeological site. In the evening, if you’re in the mood for a true Mexican fiesta, we’ll head over to Plaza Garibaldi. Famous for its mariachi bands playing traditional tunes, this lively square is where locals come together to celebrate and dance. Here we can snack on antojitos—classic Mexican bites—and enjoy some optional tequila in an authentic Mexican style.

Highlights: Breakfast at the chinampas, Xochimilco boat tour

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning we’ll head to Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its network of canals and chinampas, artificial islands built centuries ago by the Aztecs to grow crops. These chinampas, still tended today, offer a window into ancient farming methods and remain largely off the typical tourist trail. We’ll start by enjoying a late traditional breakfast right on the chinampas, learning about their pre-Hispanic origins and the role they continue to play in local agriculture. From there, we’ll hop aboard a trajinera, a brightly painted wooden boat, and drift through quieter canals before moving into the livelier areas, where mariachi music echoes over the water and local families gather to celebrate. After savoring a nearby Mexican lunch, we’ll head back to our hotel. You can take it easy or venture out again—your tour leader will be there to help with suggestions and point you toward the city’s best spots.

Accomodation

On this tour, we’ll stay in a comfortable and convenient 4* hotel. All rooms have a private bathroom. There are a maximum of 8 single rooms available. These rooms will be offered on a first come-first served basis. The remainder of the rooms will be shared. Solo travelers will be paired together, two travelers per room in two single beds. (*Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.)

With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!
