Wander to Peru

Overview

Join us for an exciting and unbelievably memorable journey through Peru, where the Amazon rainforest, Andes mountains and rich traditions of the Incan civilization all come together!

This unique trip to Peru will take us from the depths of the Amazon rainforest to the heart of the Sacred Valley and beyond. We’ll start our journey by venturing into the jungle, where riverboats and forest trails will lead us to hidden lakes, wildlife-rich ecosystems, and encounters with the region’s unique flora and fauna. We’ll also visit a local village where we’ll learn about a way of life that involves traditional hunting and fishing techniques and traditional plant medicine. From there we’ll fly to the Andes, where the landscapes shift dramatically, revealing ancient agricultural terraces, bustling markets, and small villages that have preserved their traditions for centuries. And, of course, we’ll make our way to the legendary Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, where we’ll walk through the incredible ruins, exploring its temples, terraces, and sacred sites while learning about the engineering and spiritual significance behind this lost city.

Throughout the journey we won’t just be seeing Peru, we’ll be experiencing it firsthand. We’ll explore the Sacred Valley, visiting the circular terraces of Moray, the salt flats of Maras, and local communities that have maintained their ancestral customs for generations. We’ll connect with Andean farmers, learning about their agricultural techniques, the significance of crops like quinoa and potatoes, and how they prepare their meals using traditional methods. We’ll also visit chicherías to see how locals brew their corn beer, meet the caseras, the women who run the lively markets in the valley, and get a firsthand look at daily life in these highland communities.

What makes this trip special is the balance between adventure, history, and cultural immersion. We’ll travel through some of the most stunning landscapes in South America while engaging with the people who call these places home. Whether it’s spotting wildlife in the jungle, walking through centuries-old Inca sites, or learning about traditional Andean farming and food preparation, every day will bring something new!

Today we’ll take a short 1-hour flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peru’s Amazon region. After landing we’ll head straight to the river and board a motorized canoe for a 25-minute ride along the Madre de Dios river. As we travel we’ll start getting to know the landscape with the help of our naturalist guide, who will point out the region’s rich plant life and share insights about the forest’s complex ecosystem. Once we arrive at the lodge we’ll settle in and enjoy lunch before heading out for a guided walk through the surrounding forest trails. This is a chance to learn about the differences between primary and secondary rainforest, how humans have shaped parts of the landscape, and why these ecosystems matter far beyond Peru. In the late afternoon we’ll return to the river for an evening boat ride to experience the rainforest at night. As the forest darkens, we’ll learn about the gullies and waterways that make up the nighttime ecosystem, watch for the subtle movements of nocturnal animals, and if skies are clear, take a moment to look up at the constellations of the southern hemisphere.

The lake is home to rare and endangered species such as giant river otters, howler monkeys, macaws, turtles, and, if we’re lucky, anacondas. After lunch back at the lodge we’ll head into the treetops on a suspended canopy walkway, stretching nearly a quarter mile through the upper layers of the forest. Connecting a series of observation platforms, the walkway will give us a bird’s-eye view of the jungle and the chance to spot toucans, woodpeckers, monkeys, and sloths moving through the branches.

Highlights: Maras and Moray

Meal

Included: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning we’ll visit the archaeological site of Moray, an impressive system of circular terraces built by the Incas. These deep, concentric depressions functioned as an agricultural laboratory, allowing the Incas to experiment with different crops and growing conditions at varying temperatures. Standing at the edge we’ll see how each level creates its own microclimate, a testament to their advanced understanding of farming in the Andes. From there we’ll continue to the salt mines of Maras, a network of thousands of shallow pools carved into the mountainside. These terraces have been used for salt production since the time of the Incas, and even today, local families harvest salt using the same techniques passed down for generations. The contrast of the bright white salt against the rugged, green hills makes for a striking scene. After exploring these two amazing sites, we’ll stop at a restaurant for a well-earned lunch before returning to the hotel for the evening. You will have some free time to explore Urubamba, with options such as visiting a craft market, walking along the Urubamba River, or relaxing at the hotel.

Moderate/High Physical Level

Please note that this unique adventure includes long days, varying temperatures, extended time in the Amazon rainforest, and light of up to 2 hours on uneven, muddy, and unpaved terrain. You can also expect long boat rides across lakes, early morning wake-ups, and other similar scenarios. Additionally this trip takes place at altitudes ranging from 7,500 to 10,500 feet above sea level. To help with acclimatization, we begin our high altitude journey in the Amazon before traveling to higher elevations, but it's important to consider the effects of altitude when booking this trip. To fully experience Machu Picchu, you should be prepared to walk for up to three hours around the site, navigating slight hills and numerous stone steps to reach certain areas.

Accommodation

On this trip, accommodations include a selection of 3* to 4* hotels and a nature lodge in the Amazon Rainforest. All rooms have a private bathroom. *Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

We’ll use a variety of transportation methods throughout this trip. In cities and when traveling between destinations, we’ll ride in private vans. In the Amazon rainforest we’ll travel by boat to reach our lodge and for certain activities on the lake. We’ll take internal flights from Lima to Puerto Maldonado and from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco. To reach Machu Picchu, we’ll board a train to and from Aguas Calientes, the base town of the ruins, and take shared buses up the mountain to the site.

Meals

Breakfast is provided daily, along with 8 lunches and 8 dinners. For included meals, some will be served family-style, while at other times, you'll have the option to order anything you'd like from the menu. We can accommodate all dietary restrictions.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. We seek out ways to limit plastic use, trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!
