Wander To South Africa

Overview

Join Wandering Earl Tours for the ultimate adventure in stunning South Africa, where vibrant cities, breathtaking coastlines, incredible wildlife reserves, and so much more await!

Get ready to embark on a journey filled with diverse experiences, where you’ll discover this country’s beauty, immerse yourself in its rich traditions, and engage in activities that bring you closer to the heart of local culture.

We’ll begin in Cape Town, a city set between mountains and ocean, with neighborhoods that each feel different once you’re walking through them. We’ll spend a full day exploring the Cape Peninsula, with dramatic coastal viewpoints, Cape Point’s cliffs and wind, and a stop at Boulders Beach to see African penguins up close. From there we’ll slow down in Hermanus for coastal time, strong local meals, and a Whale Watching Tour out on the water. We’ll also spend time in the Cape Winelands, visiting wineries around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and staying overnight so the experience feels relaxed rather than squeezed into a day trip.

Then we’ll fly across the country to explore the wilder side of South Africa. We’ll base ourselves in St. Lucia, where the wetlands, beaches, and estuary shape daily life, and we’ll head into iSimangaliso Wetland Park for a very different kind of game drive. From there we’ll continue into the Sungulwane Game Reserve for classic safari time, with game drives focused on the Big Five, plus all the smaller moments that make wildlife watching so addictive. Along the way we’ll also include a Zulu cultural visit for local context that adds depth to everything you’re seeing.

During this trip, we’ll also soak in the rich culture of local communities, savor South African cuisine, and embrace the warmth and hospitality that make this country so special.

After breakfast, we’ll head out for a full day around the Cape Peninsula, where mountains, beaches, and the Atlantic all collide in one long scenic loop. We’ll start along the Atlantic Seaboard, passing Cape Town’s best known beach neighborhoods, with white sand below and the Twelve Apostles mountain range rising behind us. We’ll stop at Maiden’s Cove, one of the best viewpoints in the city, for a clear look at Camps Bay, Lion’s Head, and the coastline stretching south. From there we’ll follow Chapman’s Peak Drive, a cliffside road carved into the mountain above the ocean, with plenty of chances to pull over to take in the views. We’ll then continue into the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, a wild stretch of coastline where you’ll see dramatic sea cliffs, rugged vegetation, and, if we’re lucky, animals such as baboons or antelope near the road. We’ll ride the funicular up to the Cape Point viewpoint, where you’ll look out over the meeting point of two major ocean currents and see why this corner of the map has pulled in sailors and travelers for centuries. After that, we’ll visit Boulders Beach to see a colony of African penguins living among the granite boulders, often waddling right past the boardwalk as they head between the sand and the water. We’ll stop for lunch in a coastal town, then follow the False Bay side of the peninsula back toward Cape Town, passing fishing harbors and colorful beach huts before returning to the hotel for a relaxed evening.

This is one of the most beautiful routes in the region, with mountain curves, wide valley views, and long stretches of vineyards and orchards spread out below. We’ll take our time with it, stopping to stretch and soak up the scenery, before arriving in Franschhoek, a small town with a strong food and wine scene and an easy pace. Our first stop will be a winery that focuses on sparkling wine, where we’ll do a tasting and get a clearer sense of what makes the local style distinct, from crisp, dry bottles to richer, more layered ones. Afterwards we’ll head to another excellent winery for lunch on the lawns, a proper long meal outside with wine alongside, and time to relax and enjoy the setting. Later in the afternoon we’ll make the short drive to our boutique guesthouse in the heart of Franschhoek. Medium Physical Level

While the tour itself is not very strenuous, please note that it can involve the following: somewhat long days, walking tours in the cities, long hikes in nature, being outside in potentially warm temperatures, long journeys, extended periods of time in safari vehicles along uneven roads, early morning wake-ups and other similar scenarios.

Accommodation

From hotels to boutique guesthouses and a safari lodge, you can always expect comfortable 3* and 4* accommodation on this trip. All rooms have a private bathroom. *Please note: If you book a shared room and we cannot find another traveler to share that room, there will be an extra surcharge for having a single room.

Transport

During the trip, we'll get around with a combination of private passenger vans, safari vehicles and a short internal flights from Cape Town to Durban.

Meals

Breakfast every day, 9 lunches and 8 dinners are included. With included meals, some will be served family style, others will involve food tasting and other times you will be able to order anything you wish from the menu. All dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Sustainability

As with all of our trips, we aim to offer as sustainable an experience as we can. Trash is recycled where possible and we avoid mass tourism activities that cause harm to the environment and/or do not benefit local communities.

Small Groups

This tour requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure the best small group tour experience. With such a small group, you'll be able to enjoy unique, rewarding activities that would not be accessible with more people. That's the kind of trip we love to offer!

Itinerary Changes

While we do our best to follow the itinerary, changes may be made to any aspect of the tour due to a variety of potential situations or unforeseen circumstances.
