Travel / Entry
Entry Requirements
You will need a passport to travel to Mauritania. Your passport should be valid until at least July 2025 and it should have 2 full empty pages.
Citizens of the USA, EU countries, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can conveniently obtain a visa upon arrival to enter Mauritania. This means you won’t need to go through the process of getting a tourist visa from the Mauritanian Embassy beforehand. Simply bring 55€ in exact change, and the immigration staff will issue your visa and stamp your passport.
Arrival and Departure Information
The tour’s official arrival day is January 15th in Nouakchott. Please book your flight to arrive at the Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC). If you choose to arrive earlier, we can arrange extra accommodation for you at our hotel. The tour concludes on January 28th, also in Nouakchott, and you may schedule your departure flight from the NKC airport at any time that day. Should you wish to extend your stay, we can also book additional nights for you at the same hotel.
Preparation
Accommodation and Transportation
For this tour, we’ll be staying in 3-star and 4-star hotels in the cities, as well as local guesthouses and basic camping accommodations in tents. For the adventurous, there’s also an optional overnight experience on the iron ore train. While all hotels and most guesthouses offer private bathrooms, the camping sites do not have bathroom facilities. Rest assured, tents, mattresses, and blankets will be provided to ensure your comfort while camping.
*Please note: In the guesthouses, electricity may be intermittent, and hot water may not always be available. However, these accommodations offer an unforgettable experience.
Throughout our journey, we’ll explore Mauritania using private vans and 4×4 SUVs, with approximately three guests per SUV as we navigate the diverse landscapes.
Immunization
Currently, Mauritania requires proof of a yellow fever vaccine to enter the country. You may need to show this proof upon arrival to be allowed entry. No other specific immunizations are required for entry. However, it is always worthwhile to consult with a healthcare professional about any optional vaccinations that might be beneficial for you during the tour. These may include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, Typhoid, Cholera, Malaria, and Meningitis.
Money
The local currency in Mauritania is the Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU). The current exchange rate is $1 USD = 39.68 MRU.
In terms of spending money, you should estimate an average of $15 USD per day for all of your needs. This would be for meals that are not included in the tour, basic purchases (laundry service, snacks, etc) as well as any activities you choose to do on your own.
When it comes to exchanging money, the best method is to bring cash in USD or Euros that can be exchanged at local banks or to use the ATMs in the major cities. If you bring cash to exchange, please ensure your bills are clean, undamaged, and in denominations of $50 or $100 for easier exchange.
Credit cards are generally not accepted in Mauritania. While a few hotels or restaurants in major cities might accept them, it’s best to assume that you’ll need cash for all transactions throughout the country.
As for tipping, it is not as common as in the West but in some cases it is expected. Here’s a general guideline:
- Restaurants – 5% – 10% if a service charge is not already added to the bill
- Hotel staff – $1 – $2 USD (40 – 80 MRU) if someone helps you with luggage or anything else
- Our driver and local guide – At the end of the trip, we recommend that everyone gives $100 USD that will be split among our drivers and our local guide who will be with us the entire time. We will collect this on the last day and give it to them before we say goodbye.
- Tour leader – If you wish to tip your tour leader, they will always be greatly appreciative.
*Tips for waitstaff at included meals are already included.
Food / Water
Tap water in Mauritania is not ideal for drinking and you should always drink bottled water. Brushing your teeth with tap water is okay but many travelers choose to brush with bottle water instead.
Meals during our tour will be a combination of some restaurants, home cooked meals at our guesthouses and meals prepared by our team while at our camp sites. We are able to accommodate all dietary requirements and will soon send out a form to collect your dietary preferences. Please keep in mind that many meals in Mauritania will be simple given the remote locations of our destinations.
Staying Connected
Wi-Fi will be available at the hotels in the cities and at some of the guesthouses where we’ll be staying. However, the connection will generally be slower than you’re used to, especially when away from the capital city. During our camping experiences, there will be no Wi-Fi available, and 4G mobile connectivity might be limited. If you require a more consistent connection throughout the trip, we recommend activating an international roaming plan with your home network provider. Alternatively you might consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival in Mauritania or an eSIM. Please note that coverage can vary and will be limited, especially in remote areas, so it’s advisable to plan accordingly.
Drones / Cameras
You may bring your camera bodies and lenses into Mauritania as a tourist.
Although highly regulated, you may also bring a drone into Mauritania. However, to do so you must obtain a special Permission from the Mauritanian Civil Aviation Authority before your arrival. This involves submitting an application that includes details about your drone (model, and specifications), your intended use (recreational or professional), and the areas where you plan to operate it.
Please note that bringing a drone without proper authorization can result in the confiscation of your equipment, alongside legal penalties.
Outlet Adapters
Although the most common plug in the country is the Euro plug (Type C), you may also find Type E plug outlets throughout the country. It is highly recommended to purchase at least a Type C adapter in advance.
As for electricity, check your chargers to see if they say 110 – 230 V. If they do, you will not have any problems charging your device while on the tour.
Safety
Safety Tips
Mauritania is a welcoming country with a rich culture, and while it is generally safe for travelers, it’s important to remain mindful of your surroundings and exercise common sense during your visit. We recommend that you always keep an eye on your belongings—avoid placing wallets or phones in your back pockets, carry purses or shoulder bags securely in front of you, and ensure backpacks are zipped up. In crowded places, stay alert and be cautious with your valuables. Our accommodations are reliable and secure, so you can safely leave your belongings in your room when you’re out exploring. By following these simple precautions, you can fully enjoy your adventure in Mauritania with peace of mind.
Scams
Given the lack of tourism, scams are few and far between in Mauritania. Apart from overcharging travelers in markets and shops, there is not much to worry about. In such cases, we recommend negotiating politely to reach a fair deal or asking your guide or tour leader to do it for you. We will discuss such topics during our orientation meeting.
Weather / Packing
Weather
During this trip, we can expect relatively consistent weather. January is an ideal time to visit Mauritania, offering temperatures that allow us to comfortably explore during the day. While the days are warm, the heat is generally manageable, and evenings can be cool. Here are the average temperatures for each destination we will visit:
- Nouakchott: 84°F/29°C high – 59°F/15°C low
- Chinguetti: 73°F/23°C high – 48°F/9°C low
- Atar: 82°F/28°C high – 59°F/15°C low
- Nouadhibou: 77°F/25°C high – 59°F/15°C low
Clothing Requirements
Mauritania is a conservative country with strong Islamic traditions, so it’s important to dress modestly. For both men and women, wearing shorts in public is uncommon. Instead it’s recommended to wear pants or long skirts that go below the knees, along with shirts that cover the shoulders and have at least short sleeves.
For women, it’s a good idea to carry a shawl or scarf to cover your head or shoulders when needed, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional communities.
Packing
We recommend packing the following items:
- Pants (4-5 pairs – comfortable, lightweight)
- Shirts (4-5 short-sleeve shirts, 4-5 long-sleeve shirts)
- Shorts (1 pair for use in private areas like the hotel or campsite)
- Swimsuit
- Underwear and socks
- Shoes (comfortable walking shoes or sneakers)
- Sandals (for casual wear)
- Warm clothing (2 sweaters and a light jacket for cooler nights, especially in the desert)
- Toiletries
- Medications (bring enough of any prescription medicines you take)
- Small daypack (for daily excursions)
- Gadgets and chargers (don’t forget a travel adapter)
- Earplugs (helpful if you’re a light sleeper, especially during camping)
- Sunglasses
- Hat (for sun protection)
- Shawl or scarf (useful for women to cover head or shoulders when needed)
- Flashlight or headlamp (useful during camping nights)
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes (for hygiene when facilities are limited)
The most important thing is not to overpack. Traveling through Mauritania, especially in desert regions and when using 4×4 vehicles, can be more comfortable with less luggage. You’ll appreciate having a manageable amount of belongings once the tour begins.
If you have any questions about specific items you’re considering bringing, please send us an email, and we’ll be happy to advise you on whether they’re necessary for this trip.
